چکیده

Tensegrity structures are spatial reticulated structures composed of cables and struts. A tensioncompression equilibrium leads to lightweight systems that change shape through length changes in their members. Active members thus control several degrees of freedom simultaneously. Tensegrityring modules are transformable circuit-pattern modules. The linear combination of tensegrity rings has been shown to be viable for a footbridge application. Shape transformations of a 1⁄4 scale fourring-module tensegrity-footbridge system are studied in this paper. Transformations are obtained employing active continuous cables and springs in the tensegrity system to reduce the number of active elements. Obtaining a desired shape may involve independent actuation in several active elements. Independent actuation steps are found with the combination of a dynamic relaxation algorithm and a stochastic search algorithm.

Deployment aspects of a tensegrity-ring pedestrian bridge

Tensegrity structures are spatial systems that are composed of tension and compression components in a selfequilibrated prestress stable state. Although tensegrity systems were first introduced in 1950s, few examples have been used for civil engineering purposes. In this paper, tensegrity-ring modules are used for a deployable pedestrian bridge. Ring modules belong to a special family of tenseg...

Deployment of a Pentagonal “Hollow-Rope” Tensegrity Module Summary

Tensegrity structures are spatial reticulated structures composed of cables and struts. Tensegrity systems are good candidates for adaptive and deployable structures and thus have applications in various engineering fields. A “hollow-rope” tensegrity system composed of tensegrity-ring modules has been demonstrated by the authors to be a viable system for a pedestrian bridge. This paper focuses ...

The Footbridge Dilemma Reflects More Utilitarian Thinking Than The Trolley Dilemma: Effect Of Number Of Victims In Moral Dilemmas

Previous studies on moral judgment have assumed that the trolley and footbridge dilemmas (Thomson, 1985) reflect utilitarian and deontologist thinking, respectively. However, on the basis of the “intervention myopia” hypothesis (Waldmann & Dieterich, 2007) and recent findings in analyses of moral dilemmas (Nakamura, 2011), the current study led a somewhat paradoxical prediction: An effect of th...

Algebraic tensegrity form-finding

This paper concerns the form-finding problem for general and symmetric tensegrity structures with shape constraints. A number of different geometries are treated and several fundamental properties of tensegrity structures are identified that simplify the form-finding problem. The concept of a tensegrity invariance (similarity) transformation is defined and it is shown that tensegrity equilibriu...
